About ChatGPT

ChatGPT, built by OpenAI, is the conversational AI assistant that made artificial intelligence mainstream. It handles writing, translation, coding, brainstorming, research, and everyday questions in a single chat window, and it keeps improving with every major model release.

It works equally well for quick tasks — drafting an email, rewriting a paragraph, explaining a concept — and for serious work like debugging code, analyzing documents, and planning projects. The free tier covers most everyday needs, while ChatGPT Plus unlocks the latest models, image generation, and higher usage limits.

If you only install one AI tool this year, ChatGPT is the safest default: it is the most widely used, best documented, and most consistently upgraded assistant on the market.

Core Features of ChatGPT

What ChatGPT does, drawn from the vendor’s product documentation and our own use of the product — with the claims we could not confirm called out where they matter.

01General-purpose chat

Ask anything — writing, analysis, translation, math, coding, and creative work — in natural language.

02Web search integration

Get up-to-date answers with sources when you enable browsing, instead of training-data-only replies.

03Image generation

Create and edit images directly in the chat with built-in DALL·E support.

04Document analysis

Upload PDFs, spreadsheets, and images and ask questions about their contents.

05Voice conversations

Speak naturally and get spoken replies on mobile for hands-free assistance.

06Custom GPTs

Build your own tailored assistants for specific workflows, then share them with others.

07Memory & projects

Remember preferences across sessions and organize chats into projects for long-term work.

ChatGPT: strengths and trade-offs

Our own read on the product — written from the vendor’s documentation and our use of it, not from a vendor brief.

What it does well

  • The widest set of abilities in one place — writing, code, image generation, file analysis and voice all live in the same chat, so you rarely need a second tab.
  • The most predictable free tier among frontier assistants: heavy daily use on the free plan is realistic if you are not hammering the newest model.
  • Ecosystem depth — custom GPTs, a mature mobile app, and near-universal integration support mean almost every workflow tutorial online assumes you have it.

Where it falls short

  • Free-tier limits tighten whenever a new model ships, and the gap between free and Plus is felt most on long documents and image generation.
  • The newest reasoning models are rate-limited even on paid plans during peak hours.
  • It is a generalist: for very long documents or heavily technical writing, the specialist assistants below often produce a cleaner first draft.

Who should skip ChatGPT

  • Writers who need the same voice held across a 100-page manuscript — that is where Claude is stronger.
  • Anyone who needs answers always backed by current, cited sources — that is Perplexity’s job.

ChatGPT compared with the alternatives

The same dimensions, side by side — what each tool is actually better at, and which one to pick for the job you have.

ChatGPT vs Claude

Read our Claude listing

Free tier

ChatGPT

Usable daily; the newest reasoning model is rate-limited at peak hours.

Claude

Free messages are capped over a rolling window — fine for a few sessions, tight for all-day work.

Long documents

ChatGPT

Takes large uploads, but detail drifts once a document runs to hundreds of pages.

Claude

Its long context holds a whole book with noticeably less drift.

Writing voice

ChatGPT

Neutral and list-shaped by default; needs prompting to avoid generic output.

Claude

Holds one consistent voice across a long draft.

Ecosystem

ChatGPT

Custom GPTs, voice mode, image generation and the widest third-party integration base.

Claude

Fewer extras — no image generation, thinner integrations.

Which to pick. Pick ChatGPT when you want one app that also makes images, speaks and plugs into everything else. Pick Claude when the job is a long document that has to read as if one person wrote it.

ChatGPT vs Gemini

Read our Gemini listing

Free tier

ChatGPT

Free plan with daily caps on the newest models.

Gemini

Generous free allowance including current Flash models, no card required.

Office suite

ChatGPT

No native Docs or Gmail integration — it works on files you upload.

Gemini

Reads and writes directly inside Docs, Sheets, Gmail and Drive.

Search grounding

ChatGPT

Web search exists, but the citations are inconsistent.

Gemini

Answers are grounded in Google Search with visible source links.

Image and video

ChatGPT

Image generation in-app; video comes from a separate product.

Gemini

Image generation plus Google’s video model on the same account.

Which to pick. Choose ChatGPT for a single generalist assistant. Choose Gemini if your material already lives in Google Workspace and you want answers that show what they read.

Pricing Model

Freemium. The free plan is genuinely useful for daily tasks. ChatGPT Plus (about $20/month) adds the newest models, image generation, and priority access.
